Empty, Katrina Series
This is one of several pictures I've created from photos of post-Katrina New Orleans in 2005. I took at least a hundred of these, all of them ghastly. This is a digital enhancement of one of those photos.
There is nothing particularly exceptional about this house: There were thousands just like it, and much worse. The spray-painted writing above the front door was made by rescue workers who marked each house with a special code to indicate, among other things, whether any bodies had been found inside. I don't know what these markings indicate, which perhaps is just as well.
