Vincent's Ear
As I was sketching this imaginary landscape, I thought about Vincent Van Gogh: You can see his influence in the twisted trees and winding country path that leads nowhere.
The shape of that path (turn it 90 degrees counter-clockwise) resembles a human ear. Is it the mutilated ear of the great painter? Did I paint it without even knowing I was painting it?
I honestly don't know; but I know that I do my most interesting work when I have no idea what I'm doing.
As you may have heard, there is new theory that Vincent did not actually cut his own ear: The theory is that Paul Gauguin (with whom he was arguing, and who was an expert swordsman) performed the surgery himself, afterward fleeing to Tahiti. Among other evidence there is a cryptic remark, written by Vincent's brother Theo, that "at least Gauguin didn't have a machine gun!"
I hate historical revisionism, especially when it sounds reasonable.
