I Still Like You, Alfred G. Caplin
"Abstract art is the product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the totally bewildered."
That's a famous quote from cartoonist Al Capp. I find it insulting. I also find it funny.
When I was starting out as a young cartoonist, Al Capp was the Mozart of the art form. His brilliant satirical comic strip, Li'l Abner, was drawn as well as anything I had ever encountered; and I studied it endlessly, hoping to discover whatever strange magic Capp employed to make it happen.
At this time, Li'l Abner was already declining in popularity: Charles Schulz and Charlie Brown had introduced the simple, streamlined modern comic. Capp's meticulous draftsmanship seemed old-fashioned; and his death in 1979 effectively marked the end of an era.
Capp was a cantankerous curmudgeon who would utterly despise this painting. I dedicate it to him all the same because he is dead and can't stop me.
And in the rascal's honor I lift a flowing flagon of Kickapoo Joy Juice.
