Blue Odalisque
Odalisques have always been popular with artists.
Strictly defined, an odalisque is a young girl who resides in a harem (also known as a "seraglio") and acts as a servant to the wives and concubines there. A concubine would need (let's say) a fig peeled, and it would be the odalisque's job to do the peeling.
In the 1800s, the term was adopted by respectable gentlemen in euphemistic reference to their (much less respectable) mistresses.
To artists, the term refers to pretty much any young lady who reclines on a rug or divan, usually wearing a wistful expression and very little else .
Henri Matisse was especially intrigued by odalisques, painting them many times. I created this blue odalisque as an homage to Matisse, whose figs I am not worthy to peel.
