Ukiyo
The name is Japanese for "floating world."
The name refers to the floating social and economic status of the rising Japanese merchant class between the late 17th and early 20th centuries. As the once-inflexible Japanese caste system began to deteriorate, the modern Japanese, much like the Americans of the Old West, were free to create any society that suited their needs and wishes.
One of the things they wanted most (and something once owned only by the wealthy) was art. The development of woodblock printing made it possible for people of average means to decorate their homes in a way that medieval Japanese would have found unimaginable. These woodblock prints (called "ukiyo-e") were hugely popular not only in Japan, but in Europe and America: There they inspired the Impressionists and were influential in the birth of modern art.
As I finished this picture, I began to see Japanese fans and parasols brushing past one another as middle-class Japanese courtesans, merchants, actors and shopkeepers tend to their business in the marketplace.
