Ascending Balloons
Here's a scene from the annual Balloon Festival in Baton Rouge. A race is about to begin, and the balloons are being inflated. Onlookers pass from one to another, assessing the balloons' respective colors and designs.
I worked on this one for a while with indifferent results, never quite finding the right interpretation. I was satisfied only when I decided to employ a wildly exaggerated Fauvist palette that calls attention not to the subject matter, but to the color and composition.
