The Naked Maja
Some of you will recognize the title as that of a famous nude by Francisco Goya (1746-1828). Described as the first "totally secular life-sized female nude in Western art," the painting was scandalous enough to be seized by the Spanish Inquisition.
During the 18th and 19th Centuries, the term Majo (masc.) or Maja (fem.) was used in reference to a lower-class Spaniard. My model was not (as far as I know) a lower-class Spaniard, or a lower-class anything; but I have called her that because I have painted her in a style that reminds me of Goya and the dark world he painted.
