Stop That, Thomas Kinkade!
Well, he has stopped. Thomas Kinkade is dead at the age of 54.
I painted this silly abstract a long while ago, and because I had no proper title for it I simply decided to take a poke at the “painter of light.”
I’ve seen some of Kinkade’s non-commercial work, and in my opinion it wasn’t too bad. The man had talent. But his commercial work—the stuff that most of you know—is in my opinion quite ghastly, dripping with fake “prettiness” and sentiment that are positively suffocating. Viewing a Kinkade painting is, for me, like being beaten with a sack of Valentine cards.
Well, I am guilty of a few artistic sins myself. Any artist is, if he has dared to venture into the great brothel that is commercial art. It’s easy to mock and condemn, but as I grow older I have less criticism for those who stray from the paths of artistic righteousness.
We do what we can. Sometimes we have to make compromises. Sometimes we make too many compromises. But who can define “too many” when he’s working for a living and has to meet deadlines?
I still don’t like his popular work; but he made a lot of people very happy, and that is more than most of us will do. Now Kinkade is exchanging painting tips with Bob Ross, who in turn is demonstrating his “happy trees” technique.
Well, God bless both of ‘em.
